We have arrived in Sevilla, where we will be based for the rest of our trip. Lidia and Javi showed us to our apartment and helped orient us to the neighborhood and the city. We had a great lunch of tapas and salad just down from our place on the pedestrian-only street, and hung our clothes to dry on the rooftop clothesline. Our rooftop overlooks Iglesia Sta. Magdalena, which our map notes is Sevilla's most important Baroque structure. We went to a big super mercado which is in the basement of a major department store and had fun stocking up with groceries.
We took a walking tour with a group led by Concepcion, an excellent tour guide who gave us history, humor and general commentary on life in Sevilla. We learned that the city has five patron saints, one of whom, King Ferdinand aka San Fernando, is pictured on the right.
We had an interesting lunch at Patio San Eloy, with many Iberian hams hanging above the counter. We are enjoying trying out various tapas and salads, and of course the vino tinto flows more cheaply than the aqua.
We ended the evening with a walk to the Metropol Parasol (known by its detractors as the mushrooms) which is an amazing structure but we hear that it was very controversial in that its cost exceeded 1.5 euros in very tough economic times, and it is a modern structure in the middle of historic Sevilla. The plan was to build a parking garage but they created an archaeological museum once Roman artifacts were found at the site.
